Brian, a lifelong Arbroath resident, is a dedicated sportsman with a particular fondness for football, golf, and watching various sports. With a love for travel, he enjoys discovering new places and incorporating fresh ideas into his local community. Known for his friendly and approachable nature, Brian believes in the importance of laughter and connection for a fulfilling life.
After completing his education at Warddykes Primary School and Arbroath Academy, Brian studied Graphic Design which led to me becoming a Draughtsman with Water Services. He then changed his Civil Engineering career from water to roads starting as a Trainee Technician and rising to the post of a Service Manager managing 5 teams. Late in his career, he moved into management and completed a Business Management Degree at Robert Gordons University.
During his career, Brian has dealt mainly with parking, road safety, sustainable transport and all kinds of traffic related issues. His experiences have been diverse and ranged from dealing with fatal accidents to twice organising the traffic management for the Open Golf Championship at Carnoustie. He has delivered many engineering projects in the public domain and throughout these has engaged and worked extensively with the public, local community groups, elected members, MPs and MSPs.
After just under 40 years of public service, Brian retired in 2024 as a Service Manager with Perth & Kinross Council. Prior to this he worked for Tayside Regional Council and Angus Council. He’s now in a new career as a golf caddy at Carnoustie where he love meeting different people each day from all over the world – “the best job I have ever had!”.
Brian has a long-standing commitment to community service, particularly in the Arbroath area. He has served in leadership roles in various local charities, including chairing Arbroath Round Table and Area 49 Round Table. His involvement in the Arbroath Relay for Life event in 2014 was instrumental in raising a record £155,000 for Cancer Research.
In recent years, Brian has played a significant role in the establishment and development of Arbroath FC Community Trust, serving as a Trustee and working to raise funds and support vulnerable members of the community. His dedication to public service and his ability to deliver positive outcomes have been recognised by many.
In 2015, Brian was invited to become Director of Arbroath Football Club and he has served the club during a period that is recognised as being one of its most successful periods both on and off the pitch. The improvements made to the club, including its incredible growth, the upgrading of the ground and in particular the engagement in the community are achievements that he is very proud to have been a part of. The club is now seen as a key player in the community and through the Community Trust it is making a difference using the power of the football club badge. In the summer of 2024, he was invited to be the Vice Chairman of Arbroath Football Club.
“This project with Arbroath Town Board, is a once in a lifetime opportunity for those involved in delivering the plan and the project, but more importantly for the people of Arbroath. I believe that I have both the skills and the experience to be a valuable part of the board.”
